Formentera hosts activity-packed weekend for Sant Jordi

The Office of Culture of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that the main events of the local Sant Jordi programme will take shape this weekend. Vanessa Parellada, culture councillor, encouraged all of Formentera to "enjoy the many activities planned for all audiences", and called it "the perfect chance to bring books and culture to islanders".

Saturday 22 April, Príncep Totilau theatre company will present their family show El meu amic Brutus.

Brutus and his nutty, happy-go-lucky family of mountain peasants decide one fine day to leave the cave where they live to see the world and exchange the apples from their orchard for stories and tales. Along the way, they will get all the families they meet to sing, dance and play traditional games.

This 50-minute all-ages production will be performed Saturday 22 April at 12 noon in Plaça de l'Església in Sant Ferran.

Later that day, from 6.00pm, the Casal de Joves will host a workshop where participants can craft postcards with collages and poems.

That same Saturday from 5.30pm, one of the Sant Jordi concerts will be held in the courtyard of Sa Senieta: a performance by the City of Eivissa Symphonic Band. Under the direction of Miquel Àngel Aguiló, 41 musicians will delight the crowd with a varied selection of fragments from film soundtracks. The stretch of Carrer Pla del Rei (PMV 820-1) extending from the roundabout at the entrance of Sant Francesc to Sa Senieta will be closed from 5.00pm until 7.30pm.

Diada de Sant Jordi
Sunday 23 April, the feast day of St George, or Diada de Sant Jordi, the classic tables to buy and exchange books will take over Plaça de la Constitució from 10.00am to 1.00pm. This event benefits from the collaboration of the local chapter of Obra Cultural Balear, Formentera libraries, the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) and ADN Collective.

Also participating in the day with the signing and sale of their books are the authors Artur Parron, with El Partit Comunista a Eivissa i Formentera (1932-1979), and Anna Costa, with Rodolins acolorits per a grans i petits.

For the Diada's crowning event, Formentera will enjoy a performance by Imaràntia. The duet will perform songs from RetrUc, a work exploring the UC songbook, expressing gratitude, and celebrating the group's three founding members.

The concert will be held at Sala de Cultura (Cinema) Sunday 23 April at 8.30pm. Tickets go on sale Friday 14 April on www.entradesformentera.cat.

Sant Jordi exhibition and awards gala
Monday to Saturday (24 to 29 April), Centre Antoni Tur "Gabrielet" will host the annual display of submissions from the Antoni Tur "Gabrielet" Bookmark Contest, which this year turns 23. The exhibit will open 10.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 7.00pm (closed Sundays). This exhibition features work from kids in the early childhood and primary school programmes of Sant Ferran, Mestre Lluís Andreu, El Pilar and Virgen Milagrosa, as well as the island's two nurseries.

Pupils and their families will additionally be able to enjoy the Sant Jordi awards gala, with Anakrònica on hand to provide entertainment, the troupe's show La Rosa i el Drac.

The gala will start at 5.30pm Monday 24 April in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

Correllengua
The following week, Saturday 29 April, Formentera will host its three-part Correllengua:

A first stage from the lighthouse of La Mola to Sant Francesc and departing at 10.00am; a second stage from Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse to Sant Francesc with departure at 4.00pm, and a third stage from La Savina to Sant Francesc with departure at 7.30pm, and arrival at 8.30pm, to kick off an evening of concerts.

Plataforma per la Llengua organises Correllengua as a festive and active festival to encourage the use of the Catalan language in all social spheres. Then, Monday 1 May from 9.00am, the Consell de Formentera plenary hall (sala de plens) will be the scene of the 49th Onomastics Society Colloquium, organised jointly by the Onomastics Society and Consell.
