Local road closes for upgrades

entrada aparcament dissuassiu sant ferranThe Formentera Council's infrastructure and mobility offices wish to announce that due to construction, from this Wednesday, January 10, carrer Guillem de Montgrí will be closed. Carrer Guillem de Montgrí is an arterial that cuts across es Pujols and communicates the main road (avinguda Joan Castelló Guasch) with the town's roundabout.

Changes in vehicle traffic flow
To offset for the closure, a series of changes have been instated to minimise impact on mobility in town. The following are the main changes:

Access to the Sant Ferran school; with access to avinguda Joan Castelló Guasch via two roads —Sant Jaume and Tarragona— still open, access to the school will be unaffected despite the road closure.

Access to carrer Major; motorists can still access the northern stretch of carrer Major from the northern-most roundabout at the town's entrance.

Pedestrian access; carrers Mallorca, Menorca and Havana can still be reached via carrer Alacant, which will accommodate vehicle traffic both ways during construction.

Likewise, drivers must use the ring road in order to travel to the southern parts of Sant Ferran and es Pujols.

It bears remembering that an 70-vehicle overflow car park was opened in early December in a bid to minimise inconveniences caused by the works. The lot is located adjacent to the roundabout.

Work across two sites —at carrers Guillem de Montgrí and València— started this Wednesday and is expected to be complete by May 1.

Council tees up one-off transport plan for January 3 showdown between SD Formentera and Deportivo Alavés

As SD Formentera gear up to face off against Deportivo Alavés at the island's local pitch, the Office of Mobility of the Formentera Council have put together plans to reroute traffic from an adjacent road, Camí Vell de la Mola. The match, part of the round of sixteen in the Copa del Rey, or King's Cup, will begin at 7.00pm on Wednesday, January 3.

The logic of the plan is to assure orderly, fluid entry to and exit from the Camp Municipal d'Esports before and after the match. The following conditions must be respected by any attending persons:

3.00pm to 10.00pm: Controlled circulation along Camí Vell de la Mola, one-way towards Es Ca Marí from Sant Francesc.
3.00pm to 4.00pm: Vehicle traffic without restrictions.
4.00pm to 10.00pm: Vehicle traffic prohibited except for authorised officials and area residents.
5.30pm: Pitch gates open.

As spectators are asked to arrive at the match on foot, a meet-up is scheduled for 5.00pm in the Sant Francesc town square. From there, all are encouraged to come out to show support for SD Formentera during this historic fixture.

A free pick-up and drop-off shuttle service will be available from 5.00pm to 7.00pm for individuals with special mobility needs. The coach will make four stops in Sant Francesc: sa Senieta, Antoni Blanc fitness centre, Fossar Vell parking lot and the roundabout. Riders must wait at these locations to be picked up. Service will continue after the match.

FANS FROM EIVISSA
Additional coaches serving the regular La Savina port-Sant Francesc bus route will accommodate football fans traveling from Eivissa for the event. From 9.30am to 7.00pm, every boat that arrives at the port will be met with a bus to take passengers from La Savina to the Sant Francesc roundabout. Access to the Camp Municipal both before and after the game will be limited to pedestrians. Following the match, buses bound for La Savina will depart from the roundabout. Riders will be charged €3 for a single ticket; return tickets are €5.

At close of 2017, motorists on vehicle inspection service's waiting list: zero

Foto itv formenteraThe Formentera Council's Office of Mobility reports that, as ever, the Technical Inspection of Vehicles, or ITV, will temporarily close its doors for the Christmas season. Personnel at the office, which conducts roadworthiness tests, will take their winter holiday from December 18 to January 19.

On another note, we are pleased to announce that at year end 2017, no names will remain on the ITV office's list of drivers waiting to perform vehicle tests. After temporarily shuttering when a specialist took leave in September, the office added afternoon appointments in October and November to recoup the time and finish the year without a wait list.

Upgrades on two main roads make for changes around Sant Ferran

Foto obres sant ferranThe Formentera Council's Office of Infrastructure and Mobility wishes to announce that due construction work on two streets, carrer Guillem de Montgrí and carrer València, a new car park will be made available from Thursday, December 7. According to department head Rafael González, the 70-vehicle lot will be 75 metres from the arterials' juncture, with access from the nearby roundabout. The idea, assured González, is to minimise the inconveniences caused by the road work and let drivers in Sant Ferran park close to home.

The bus stop that was previously located on avinguda Joan Castelló i Guasch and which provided service to lines L1, L2 and school buses will be moved to the roundabout as well. Rubbish collection will also be suspended on the two thoroughfares and relocated to the roundabout. All part of an effort, González assured, to keep the inconvenience to a minimum.

The changes will remain in effect over the course of the road work, which is scheduled to conclude on May 1.

Ses Salines's average entries per-day in summertime? 541 cars and 922 scooters

mobilitat sostenibleThe Formentera Council reports that from May 19 to September 30, in terms of non-resident island visitors, the ses Salines nature preserve recorded an average of 541 cars and 922 scooters entering the park every day. This summer, the nature reserve's total tally of cars driven by out-of-towners was 72,514 (3,901 less than in 2016). Headcount of tourists visiting by scooter? 123,585, or 21,523 less than last year. Meanwhile, looking at 2015 figures, this year non-resident drivers made up for 3,015 more of ses Salines's car visits, and 1,463 less of its scooter visits. Councillor Rafael González divulged the information today at the Council.

Ses Salines's Formentera site has parking for 384 cars and 1,132 moterscooters, though, due to rotation, the total number of vehicles in lots at times exceed this capacity. Bus access to the nature preserve has been regulated since 2016. Regular bus service has remained in 2017, with buses allowed a maximum of 13 trips in and out per day. Discretional service into the park has dropped, to 42 buses entering the park compared to last year's high of 72.

Collection
Ibifor, which holds the contract to superintend the preserve's car parks, took in €775,895, €102,213 less than in 2016. The Formentera Council will keep €140,000, plus an additional variable sum (€26,650) based on total revenues. The money is funneled into park maintenance, like beachside safety upgrades and road repairs. Inside the park there are services for road cleaning and rubbish collection, both part of a broader effort to better the park's image.

For two years running, quads have been prohibited entry into the park in an effort to minimise degradation and promote conservation.

Shade spots
As was already the case last year, the Balearic coastal authority applied a discount on the Council's lease of car park areas, in exchange for which the administration continues its gradual rebuilding of shade structures over parking lots. Last year crews rebuilt the arbour at the lot adjacent to ses Xalanes beach (point of access to Pirata beach bar) and efforts continue afoot this year.

Individuals who enter the park on foot, bicycle or by electric vehicles are not charged admission, park of the Formentera Council's ongoing commitment to sustainable mobility.
