Public transport free for riders with disabilities, dependents, companions and minors

cartell 2021 transport public gratuitThe Formentera Department of Mobility reports that from 4 June rides on public buses will be free for the following residents and visitors:

- Riders under 18
- Riders with disabilities/dependents and their companions.

Mobility chief Rafael González voiced his satisfaction at launching an initiative which, for one, aims to “promote public transport and sustainable mobility so young islanders can form the lasting habit of using public transport and understand its advantages”. “It’s also about facilitating autonomy and mobility for care-dependent riders and riders with disabilities and their companions”, said González, who traced the origins of the initiative to a petition made to the Consell d’Entitats by the Pau Mayans Association for the Integration of People with ASD.

Free, no-hassle service
Riders who wish to benefit from free transport must provide certain documentation. Minors must supply a photo ID or passport, while individuals with disabilities, care-dependent riders and their companions must provide documentation accrediting their degree of disability or, alternately, a certificate attesting disability or care-dependency. “The goal was to make accessing the free service easy, which is why there’s no paperwork: an ID card or other proof of disability or care-dependency are all that’s required to access the service”, explained Gonzalez.

formentera.eco 2021
Free rides are just one of many measures included in the 2021 formentera.eco plan for sustainable mobility. In the words of the mobility chief, “It’s one more step down the path to sustainable mobility that the Consell de Formentera has been on for years”.

Formentera to reinstate formentera.eco fee in summer 2021

Decision to suspend fees came amid uncertainty around summer 2020 season. Residents of Balearics get accreditation at no charge.

The Formentera Department of Mobility reports that this summer motorists will again have to pay a fee to drive on the island between 24 June and 7 September 2021. Visitors must pay €1.00/day (€5.00 minimum) for cars and €0.50/day for motorbikes and mopeds (€2.50 minimum). Residents of Formentera and the rest of the Balearics, and drivers of electric vehicles, receive formentera.eco accreditation free of charge.

Mobility councillor Rafael González explained, “We thought it appropriate to reinstate the fee given the favourable turn of pandemic conditions and growing demand among Formentera’s visitors to come to the island with a personal vehicle”. The fee was placed on hold last year in a context of uncertain prospects for the summer season.

González said high demand in 2020 meant some drivers saw their accreditation requests denied during the month of August.

In addition, commercial interest has been detected in the maritime route connecting the two Pine Islands. One of the ferry companies has taken issue with formentera.eco for limiting the stream of incoming vehicles, and an additional firm has shown interest in providing service on the Eivissa-Formentera line. By González’s lights, “It speaks to the need for a scheme like formentera.eco, where the idea is to keep residents and visitors happy and guarantee sustainability by preventing high-season strain on local roads”.

Confirming bookings
On 15 March, the formentera.eco website began offering drivers the possibility of reserving vehicle accreditation in advance and confirming the booking via email and payment in the first half of June. González said the fee was designed to encourage longer stays, which he described as “particularly key to local tourism”.

Advance reservations
González drew attention to the 50% increase in advance reservations registered by formentera.eco since emergency orders were lifted. 1,783 advance reservations were made during the 56-day period from 15 March to 9 May (per-day average: 32). 491 advance reservations were made during the ten days from 10 to 19 May (per-day average: 49). The upward trend was highlighted by President Ferrer and members of the local business community at a presentation at this week’s International Tourism Trade Fair (Fitur).

Consell d’Entitats
Lastly, González noted that the fee received backing from the Consell d’Entitats in February 2020. The Consell d’Entitats decision to assess the fee in summer 2021 will be communicated in the days ahead to Consell d’Entitats member groups.

Formentera lowers speed limit in towns

foto 2021 velocitat 30The Formentera Department of Mobility reports that the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has introduced new speed limits on roads in urban areas effective 11 May. “About forty signs with the new speed limit have gone up so drivers know the rules on each road”, explained FDM chair Rafael Gonzalez.

In towns, motorists are limited to 30 km/hour on most, though not all, streets. The following rules apply:

20km/hour on single-level streets (no raised pavement) like the promenade in La Savina, Carrer de Guillem de Montgrí in Sant Ferran, Carrer de Àngela Ferrer in La Mola, among others.
30km/hour on all other urban streets, including Pla del Rei in Sant Francesc and Carrer de s’Espalmador in Es Pujols, among others.

A 30km/hour speed limit is also in effect on stretches of highway that cut through towns, like on Avinguda de la Mediterrània in La Savina, Avinguda de Joan Castelló i Guasch in Sant Ferran, Avinguda de la Mola in La Mola, among others.

The speed limit is 30km/hour at roundabouts, and 50km/hour on ring roads on the outskirts of Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and Es Pujols.

Local decision-makers passed the speed limit reduction in late 2018 as part of the island’s Sustainable Mobility Plan. González pointed out that the new limits have already been in force on roads where upgrades have been performed recently.

Summer hours for metred parking on Formentera

foto 2021 parquing regulatChief of the Formentera Department of Mobility, Rafael González, reports that from tomorrow, Saturday 1 May, summer hours will be enforced in pay-to-park areas of La Savina, Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and Es Pujols. Rules are in force from Monday to Sunday 9.00am to 9.00pm.

Motorists who are eligible for the blue zone exemption can use their associated free pass while parked in any blue space on the island. Drivers ineligible for the blue zone exemption pay €1.20 an hour.

In summer and provided a pass is displayed, a vehicle can occupy the same blue zone spot up to 24 hours; in winter, the limit is extended to 72 hours. As for green zone spots, they are restricted to authorised vehicles (time limit: 24 hours) and La Savina residents (15 days).

New app
Councillor González pointed out that Flowbird Parking went online in late March, and encouraged drivers unfamiliar with the free app to download it from the App Store or Google Play and try it out. Users are asked at set-up to provide details about their vehicle. Once this data is stored, drivers can simply walk to a parking metre, enter their plate number and, instead of printing out a parking pass, they receive it directly on their smart-phone. Users can also set an alert so they know when their time is about to expire.

Tourist vouchers
González also pointed to vouchers for tourists who overnight near blue zone parking. Available at tourist accommodations in urban areas of the island, vouchers entitle their holders to 25% off standard blue zone rates.

15-minute spots
15-minute parking remains in effect. Located in Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran, these spaces are designed to promote vehicle circulation in areas of heavy business activity and parking shortage.
