The coming days will find the Formentera Office of Tourism (Conselleria de Turisme/CT) taking part in the “Tourism Innovation Summit”, a travel expo where representatives of the tourism sector gather in Sevilla from 10 to 12 November to chart the course of tourism in Spain and discuss what roles innovation, technology and sustainability will play in it.

In one round-table talk in which Formentera will participate, experts will consider how competitiveness can be a distinguishing feature with respect to competition. CT head Carlos Bernús said local reps would discuss the case of Formentera and the island's approach to smart tourism. "We will talk about the Data Observatory and how the information we collect can be leveraged to guide decisions and craft strategies in tourism and governance", he added, insisting the approach "sets us apart from other destinations".

Formentera will also detail cutting-edge conservation initiatives like the formentera.eco scheme to regulate vehicles on local roads, the island's ban on plastic bags, efforts to promote sustainable mobility, Save Posidonia Project and more. "This expo is about sharing our experiences and building the backbone of a joint strategy on competitiveness and sustainability", concluded Bernús.

Formentera becomes first European destination to sign UNESCO's Sustainable Tourism Commitment with Expedia

foto 2021 sostenibilitatThe Formentera Office Tourism has signed an agreement with the online travel agency Expedia to disseminate and promote the UNESCO Sustainable Tourism Commitment. Formentera is the first European destination to join the collaborative effort, and the second worldwide after Thailand.

“This agreement is about encouraging sustainable and responsible travel to Formentera, seeking ever greater environmental awareness and optimising sustainable practices in travel and the public and private sectors”, said Vice President and Councillor of Tourism Alejandra Ferrer. The deal includes specific measures to develop sustainability on the island, and is in line the objectives of the Tourism Reactivation Plan 2021/22, adopted by local government in consensus with the sector.

The arrangement focuses on fomenting sustainable and responsible travel by attracting quality visitors who respect the environment and generate a return for Formentera. It is also aimed at promoting sustainability with new and positive destination experiences and emerging secondary experiences. It additionally seeks to mitigate the negative environmental and cultural impacts of travel and sightseeing, establish Formentera as a leader among sustainable destinations (related projects include safeguards on posidonia, the ban on plastic bags, the promotion of sustainable mobility and more) and set an example for the travel sector in its broadest sense, nationally and internationally.

Expedia Group promotes travel around the world and will now highlight Formentera as an island that cares about sustainability. The company will bring visibility to the private sector's commitment to environmental protection by highlighting whether particular stakeholders have reduced single-use plastics, if they support local communities and culture, have cut waste and improved their management of energy and water.

The idea is also to take advantage of industry experience and digital technology to create a sustainable framework on Formentera that develops the local economy, especially in tourism, and to promote policies for the inclusion and safety of travellers.

At WTM, Formentera promises visitors unique experience and underscores commitment to sustainability

foto 2021 wtm AThe Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report that the island will be promoted at London's World Travel Market between 1 and 3 November. Formentera will have a stand, shared with the rest of the islands, where visitors will be able to learn about the island's tourism offerings, with special emphasis on off-season proposals and its sustainable side.

On the second day of the fair, Tuesday 2 November, at 1 p.m. there will be a presentation of the Balearic Islands and a round table discussion with the participation of all the islands. The vice-president and councillor of tourism, Alejandra Ferrer, will highlight in this colloquium "projects such as Formentera.eco for a more sustainable mobility or the 'Save Posidonia Project' for the protection of posidonia and our coastline, in addition to the other actions we are doing on our island to ensure that the traveller's experience is unique. Also after the covid-19 affectation on a global scale, we will continue to highlight that Formentera has a large number of open spaces with little influx of people that mean a competitive advantage as it allows you to enjoy the island in a safer way".

During the fair, contacts will be maintained with tour operators and travel agents who already have the calendar for next season set. Formentera will showcase the opportunities it offers to practice sports or enjoy its cultural offerings, explore nature or take ornithological routes, while learning about its past and the island's most deeply-rooted traditions. The last edition of the WTM was virtual, due to the health crisis, this year the two forms are combined, on 8 and 9 November there will be online meetings in which Formentera will also participate.

Global European Market

On the other hand, it should be noted that today Formentera participates in a promotional action, the Global European Market organized by the European Tourism Association. It is an activity of 15-minute appointments in which the attractions of the island are highlighted. Throughout the day more than 25 appointments are arranged with travel agencies specializing in customers with high purchasing power.
