Commission on Gender Violence holds first meeting of legislative term

The social welfare department of the Consell de Formentera reports that on Tuesday, 19 November, the Commission on Gender Violence (Comissió de Violència Masclista) convened its first meeting of the current legislative term, reasserting its commitment to defining a gender violence protocol.

At its core, the commision aims to improve assistance for women and children who have been victims of abuse, honing coordination between the various actors involved in responding to gender violence, and building an operational network around existing data-sharing resources and knowledge transfer.

Attendees of the gathering pledged to produce a response protocol by 2020, agreeing to reconvene three times over the year, in addition to reaching out to different stakeholders in an effort to shape acting protocols internally. Also up for discussion was the State Covenant (Pacto de Estado) on gender violence. Signed by every political party with representation in the Spanish parliament, the document calls for special budget allocations for programmes aimed at eradicating gender violence.

So, in combating gender violence, the commission banks on a collaborative approach to ensure quality care for affected women and children.

Eliminating violence against women is everyone’s business. It must be a common cause, one that takes individual action as well as finely-tuned collaboration and cooperation between all parts and strategies that are crosscutting, multidisciplinary and integrated. Launched by the social welfare arm of the Consell de Formentera in 2016, the Commission on Gender Violence has a diverse fleet of members representing social services, equality, health, education, the criminal justice system and law enforcement.

This Friday at Casal d'Entitats, training session for aspiring volunteers

cartell-cursos-voluntariat-22-1The social welfare office of the Consell de Formentera reports that this Friday, 22 November, the Casal d'Entitats will host a training workshop for local volunteers.

The instruction will be guided by employees of the Balearic Islands government, and is intended for volunteer groups as well as individuals interested in lending a hand. The session for groups takes place Friday, from11.30am to 1.30pm, and will offer insight into new rules that came with the passing of legislation on volunteer work in the Balearics. Individual volunteers will congregate from 3.00pm to 7.00pm, for a session that is designed as basic training for people hoping to develop a better understanding of how volunteering works, which associations are doing it, what the rules are governing it and what resources are out there for volunteers.

Signups are required for both sessions and can be processed online at www.plataformavoluntariat.org, by telephoning the toll-free number 900 102 979, or by visiting Formentera's Department of Social Welfare.

Whether as part of a group or as an individual, the Consell encourages all volunteers to come out for the day of training.

Fresh round of courses offering extra help for pupils new to language

cartell2-1-The immigration department of the Consell de Formentera reports that primary school pupils who have recently arrived from places outside the Catalan-speaking area can begin enrolment from 18 November in the latest round of a course aimed at offering language assistance. The 2019-2020 programme begins 27 November and concludes when schools break for summer.

Formentera’s office of immigration launched the initiative in response to disproportionately high rates of school failure and early school leaving among young immigrants, a hindrance to sound development in both the financial and social spheres.

In addition to giving newly arrived islanders the tools necessary to thriving in a new language, organisers also hope the course can level the playing field between students; boost learning in Catalan, the working language at schools in the Balearics; and develop skills and positive attitudes around reading and writing. The course is also seen as a valuable resource in students’ social integration and a driver of positive, active attitudes about learning the local language.

Enrolment for the courses will be handled at the Department of Social Welfare (conselleria de Benestar Social, vénda des Brolls, 53), Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm. Enrolment will remain open from 18 to 22 November. More information can be obtained by calling 971 32 12 71 or sending an email to rescolar@conselldeformentera.cat.

With wide-ranging programme, Formentera joins global day rejecting violence against women

foto-rp-vio-gen1Vanessa Parellada, consellera of Formentera’s equality department, was joined this morning by staffer Azucena Carrasco and the head of local women’s group Espai Dones, Dolores Fernández Tamargo, in unveiling the activities programme lined up in celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

First up, this Monday, it’s the 8.00pm opening in the Sala d’Exposicions of Ame Soler’s show, Tres voltes rebel. The illustrator’s art speaks to the injustices and inequality that affect women.

Things keep going on Wednesday with a 7.00pm discussion in the Sala d’Actes of local government offices. Psychologist Belén Alvite encourages participants to ponder whether porn constitutes the ideal sexual education, offering tools for talking about sex with teens, so young people can get more nuanced insight than is possible on the web.

At 9.30pm and 8.00pm on Friday 22 November and Sunday 24 November, respectively, the Sala de Cultura-Cinema will host screenings of Les invisibles. Louis-Julien Petit’s full-length feature approaches women’s inequality with humour.

25 November
An extra special programme is in store for Monday 25 November, the official International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Representatives of the Re-Acció programme of the Balearic women’s institute, IBdona, will mount an information stand at 5.00pm in Sant Francesc’s plaça de la Constitució, encouraging islanders to add their voices to the social pledge to stop gender violence. At 5.30pm, a gathering will be called for the reading of the day’s manifesto, opening and closing to the rhythm of a drum circle. After that, there will be a performance by students of the Eivissa-Formentera conservatory.

Finally, Wednesday 27 November at 7.30pm, IBdona will screen a 27-minute documentary titled Prostitució i tracta: Qüestió de poder. IBdona’s director, Maria Duran i Febrer, will be on hand at the event, together with the chief of the equality department and the Espai Dones chairwoman. A colloquium will follow and educational materials will be handed out. All activities are free.

Consellera Parellada insisted that the struggle to end violence involves all of us, and saluted Espai Dones for its work educating islanders. For her part, Fernández affirmed that real equality takes a real fight, and said that the 2019 activities programme is “one way to raise awareness”.
