Invitation for bids to construct Formentera's funeral parlour

The Formentera Council's Office of Social Welfare has announced the start of competitive bidding to build the island's municipal funeral services. Notice was placed in the official bulletin of the Balearic Islands (BOIB) on Saturday, July 1. Interested firms have 26 business days from the ad's publication to submit bids.

The Formentera Council is the arm of government authorised to grant contracts for construction of such services. The project has got a €664,000 budget (VAT included) and must be completed in eight months. The funeral parlour will be located beside the cemetery on the plot where the island's dependent persons' care centre and future residence for the elderly is located.

The Council's chief of social welfare expressed her expectation the building, which she called “a crucial part of local infrastructure,” would be ready in less than a year. “Formentera's residents deserve a quality, responsive service,” she added, “and I hope the facilities here will be equipped to provide that”.

The 388-square-metre space, complete with four viewing rooms and a special practice space for professionals, will also include a space for loved ones to gather and bid farewell to their departed.

Information for bidders can be found on the Formentera Council website in the section “perfil de contractant” and at the following link: http://www.consellinsulardeformentera.cat/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=177%3Aexposicio-publica-projectes&id=4802%3A2017-05-05-10-55-04&lang=ca.

Breastfeeding pics donated to Formentera hospital

Foto donacio fotografies lactanciaThe Formentera Council has donated a selection of photographs that were on display from March 1 to 10 at the municipal exhibition hall as part of a photo contest on Eivissa and Formentera's nursing mothers. Council chair Jaume Ferrer was joined by the managing director of the Pityusic Islands' health office, Yago Gómez, in signing off on the donation.

The gift follows last September's maiden run in the Pityuses of an initiative to encourage photography of nursing mothers, part of World Breastfeeding Week. Aimed at bringing to the fore issues faced by breastfeeding mothers, the challenge also sought to normalise nursing and use photography as a lever to raise awareness about its artfulness.

The Formentera Council staged a photo exhibition in the gallery of the former town hall, Ajuntament Vell, and has now opted to donate the prints. The bid is part of an effort to promote policies related to gender, women and job-family balance.

'Proud to Fight for Equality'

Presentacio cartell orgullCouncilwoman Vanessa Parellada and staffer Azuzena Carrasco spoke today on the run of activities lined up by the Formentera Council in celebration of this June 28's LGTBI Pride Day. The chief of social welfare described Pride Day festivities as an outgrowth of the Stonewall riots that gripped New York in 1969 and deemed the day “a clarion call in the struggle for universal values like equality, respect, diversity, liberty and non-discrimination.”

Programme
Under the banner “Proud to Fight for Equality,” this year's Pride starts Monday, June 26 with a roundtable looking back at the first twelve months of Spain's most recent LGTBI law. Lena Castells, head of coordination and support for sexual and gender diversity in the Govern balear, will lead the 7.30pm discussion in the CiF Office of Culture's lecture hall (sala d'actes).

An outdoor film screening of Matthew Warchus's Pride is in the works at Sant Francesc's Jardí de ses Eres for Wednesday, June 28 at 10.00pm. Stephen Beresford's script looks at how two distinct  communities—a crew of gays and lesbians and an association for miners' families—found a common cause in the struggle for equal rights.

The programme culminates Friday at 8.30pm with a show at the door of the Sant Ferran church. “Alerta Raspall de dents” (Mites lèsbics i altres deliris) is a playful excoriation of stereotypes by Gypsy Nel·lo and Leo Alburquerque.

In Balears, Parellada hailed a piece of landmark legislation, adopted last year on May 30, which guarantees equality for LGTBI individuals and takes aim at sexual identity- and gender-based phobias. “As a progressive administration,” Parellada said, “grasping the baton and securing visibility for LGTBI islanders isn't just a good opportunity for us, it's our duty.”

Parellada and Carrasco invited everyone on the island to come out for the events, pledging that June 28, “to fight for equality with pride.”
