Formentera prepares for family-friendly clown show “Tatanka”

foto tatanka 1The Formentera Council office of culture announces that at 6.00pm on Saturday December 29, the local cinema (Sala de Cultura) will host Minúcia theatre company's family-friendly Tatanka. Admission to the hour-long show is three euros.

Mostra d'Espectacles Infantils
Tatanka is the opening act of Formentera's twelfth “Children's Theatre Festival” (Mostra d'Espectacles Infantils), set to conclude January 20. The Mostra is put together by the promoter of children's and youth theatre initiatives in the Balearics, Sa Xerxa, and the Formentera Council, with additional support provided by Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics and Trasmapi. The show is likewise included under the umbrella of the Council's L'Illa a Escena theatre series.

Culture councillor Susana Labrador described the goal behind hosting productions like Tatanka and broader initiatives like the Mostra as “getting families to the theatre and bolstering the island's winter and holiday offering of cultural fare”.

Story
Just as Alice found Wonderland while following the trail of a white rabbit, Suli and Munyaku, too, are themselves transported to a magical, exotic and strange world.

There, they discover a new way of seeing things that will seem strange at first. But the pair will slowly start to find the philosophy of North American indians—it's not what you've got, but who you are—compelling. Will the valient duo ever want to go home?

Directed by Montse Bonet and featuring the acting of Anselm Serra and Jordi Pérez, Tatanka offers a sampling of North American indian culture and civilisation. In that regard, Bonet describes the goal as “showing audiences other ways of speaking, eating and relating to others”.

Formentera unveils 2019 calendar

foto 2018 calendari 1The Formentera Council's “Language Advisory Service” (Servei d'Assessorament Lingüístic) released its yearly calendar: a coil-spring for the office's latest educational campaign about language.

How we use words and what makes them peculiar

Past editions' themes have covered common varieties of local figs, grapes, fishing tackle and vocabulary specific to the countryside. This year the calendar spotlights a diverse array of terminology in order to take a closer look at the etymology behind the words, what about the terms themselves makes them unusual and, in some cases, the Catalan-speaking territories the featured words are typically heard.

The calendar uses pictures to illustrate words like ca, tomata, ensalada and tonyina (not to mention freu, indiot and calcetí) as well as expressions like tabacar, saligardo and emmorinat.

Two thousand copies have been printed and are available at various Council offices including the Citizen's Information Office (OAC).
