Youth gather for first plenary of legislative term

ple-infa--ncia-i-joventutjpEarlier today members of the Youth Participatory Council (Consell de Participació de la Infància i la Joventut) met in the Sala d'Actes of local government. Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer chaired the session, with the island's Department of Youth consellera sitting in as deputy chairwoman. Pupils from Formentera's three primary schools —Mestre Lluís Andreu, Sant Ferran de ses Roques and El Pilar de la Mola— make up the CPIJ's constituent members.

The children started with an overview of their classmates' petitions to Formentera's government. Among the more notable were upgrades in children's parks, public transport, renewable energy and recycling, and issues impacting the everyday lives of local children and young people.

President Ferrer made note of the suggestions and announced that based on requests brought forth at past plenary sittings of the CPIJ, crews will soon start work on a skatepark. With the necessary land already lined up, construction will also begin shortly on children's park in Sant Ferran. "What's exciting about gatherings like today's is that youth are taking part in the decision-making process of local government", pointed out President Ferrer, assuring members of the plenary "we've heard you, and the work starts today".

The young people described their experiences on World Children's Day, 20 November, when they took part in the full-house sitting of the Balearic Parlament. Local heads of commerce, education and culture, and sport, Ana Juan, Susana Labrador and Paula Ferrer, respectively, were also present at the encounter. The CPIJ convenes for two yearly sessions.

Commission on Gender Violence holds first meeting of legislative term

The social welfare department of the Consell de Formentera reports that on Tuesday, 19 November, the Commission on Gender Violence (Comissió de Violència Masclista) convened its first meeting of the current legislative term, reasserting its commitment to defining a gender violence protocol.

At its core, the commision aims to improve assistance for women and children who have been victims of abuse, honing coordination between the various actors involved in responding to gender violence, and building an operational network around existing data-sharing resources and knowledge transfer.

Attendees of the gathering pledged to produce a response protocol by 2020, agreeing to reconvene three times over the year, in addition to reaching out to different stakeholders in an effort to shape acting protocols internally. Also up for discussion was the State Covenant (Pacto de Estado) on gender violence. Signed by every political party with representation in the Spanish parliament, the document calls for special budget allocations for programmes aimed at eradicating gender violence.

So, in combating gender violence, the commission banks on a collaborative approach to ensure quality care for affected women and children.

Eliminating violence against women is everyone’s business. It must be a common cause, one that takes individual action as well as finely-tuned collaboration and cooperation between all parts and strategies that are crosscutting, multidisciplinary and integrated. Launched by the social welfare arm of the Consell de Formentera in 2016, the Commission on Gender Violence has a diverse fleet of members representing social services, equality, health, education, the criminal justice system and law enforcement.

If ferry companies won’t guarantee first and final passage to Eivissa, Balearic government will

foto mesa transport 2Formentera’s president and mobility chief, Alejandra Ferrer and Rafael González, respectively, were in Palma today for a meeting of the Committee on Maritime Transport in the Balearics (Mesa de Transport Marítim de les Illes Balears) chaired by regional mobility and housing minister Marc Pons.

Pons said officials would be sitting down in the off season to talk with ferry companies about the importance of the early-bird and late-night inter-island service, and to ascertain whether any are interested in taking up the cause. An answer is due in two weeks, and will be announced at the next commission gathering, scheduled on Formentera. According to Pons, if no company comes forward to offer 6.00am Eivissa-bound and 10.30pm return service, “the Govern balear will open up bidding and put them to tender”.

President Ferrer highlighted the work invested in moving things this far, and traced the question of first-and-final ferry passage back to 2010, when legislation on maritime transport became law. “These two journeys are very important. For islanders, it’s the difference between making the first daily plane out of Eivissa, getting home at night, visiting loved ones in the hospital or, for young people, completing studies on Eivissa. There are many valid needs at stake here”, Ferrer declared.

The president said early-bird and late-night ferry service must be “not just socially sustainable, but environmentally and financially sustainable as well”. Also at the encounter were the director general of the sea and air transport division of the Balearic government and representatives of regional ministries of environment, tourism, employment, health, and of the Mallorca, Menorca and Eivissa island councils, not to mention the CAEB, APEAM, CCOO, UGT, Marina Mercant, and chambers of commerce across the archipelago.

Formentera unveils array of incentives for islanders who support small businesses in winter

img 1822-1-Consell de Formentera commerce chief Ana Juan was joined today by Josep Mayans and Lydia Álvarez, the president and director of the island’s small- and medium-sized business association, Pimef, along with Caterina Tur from the Eivissa-Formentera chamber of commerce, in rolling out a run of commercial drives to encourage local shoppers to patronise small businesses in the months ahead.

This Friday, 29 November, Formentera and Pimef present ‘Black Friday on Formentera’, as part of the Compra a Casa customer loyalty programme. All day Friday, purchases of €15 or more at participating shops will be automatically entered to win a €50 gift card. The winner will be announced Tuesday, 3 December, and prizes can be picked up at the Pimef offices.

This Christmas, shop local
As the winter holidays draw nearer, Formentera has begun activating 'Al Nadal compra a casa', the latest in a yearly line of initiatives to reward islanders for shopping this Christmas season. Three local shoppers will be rewarded with €50, €100 and €200 Compra a Casa gift cards.

In the words of consellera Juan: “Compra a Casa is Formentera’s way of encouraging islanders to support small business, help inject life into our streets during Christmas time, and see to it residents can enjoy holiday season worthy of its name without leaving the island”.

Pimef chief Josep Mayans highlighted Compra a Casa’s 29-strong roster of participating businesses, and running tally of 2,322 customer loyalty cards since the programme débuted in 2016. Mayans also pointed out the growing heft of islanders’ total purchases, which went from €1.3 million in 2018 to €1.8M in 2019. Compra a Casa is offering more discounts, too, with this year’s running total of €35,967 dwarfing the total of €24,451 handed out last season.

Christmas Shop Window Decoration Contest
To stir the holiday spirit at shops across the island, the Chamber of Commerce and Consell de Formentera are teaming up to host the thirteenth Christmas Shop Window Decoration Contest (Concurs d’Aparadorisme Nadalenc). Registration ends today and 12 businesses have signed up so far. Winners are announced 2 December, with €75 and a commemorative plaque going to the third-place contestant, €150 and a plaque for the runner-up, and €225 and a plaque for the number-one contender.

Fresh winter push
Formentera’s commerce chief pointed out that the Consell and Pimef’s wintertime campaign would extend after the holidays to continue promoting local businesses through the winter months. In January, February and March, every purchase made in participating Compra a Casa businesses during the final week of the month will automatically be entered to win a €50 gift card.

Purchases must be €15 or more. January’s winner will be announced during the first week of February; February’s winner the first week in March; and March’s the first week in April.
