jornades estudis locals1The Consell de Formentera cultural heritage department reports that the Joan Marí Cardona Local Study Days (Jornades d’Estudis Locals) will take shape next week from Monday to Friday. The 8.15pm-nightly talks will be held next to the hospital in the conference room of the Centre de Dia.

Department chief Raquel Guasch described the gatherings as “multidisciplinary events with hard-hitting, exhaustive analysis useful to our own government in terms of documenting local history”.

The programme is as follows:

-Monday, 8: Monedes sense gent? Les fulus i els dirhams andalusins primerencs a Formentera [s.VIII-X] (Coins without people? Early Andalusian fulus and dirham on Formentera [8th to 10th century]). Félix Retamero Serralvo, a historian and professor of sciences of the Antiquity and the Middle Ages at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, will lead the talk. Retamero collaborated on the Encyclopaedia of Eivissa and Formentera, and is not only director of the Spanish Numismatic Association (AEN), but also contributes to their review Gaceta Numismática.

-Tuesday, 8: Henri Quillé. Recerca sobre l'hàbitat a Formentera (Henri Quillé: Researching habitat on Formentera). -Wednesday, 9: Sa Senieta. Una història sota la calç dels seus murs (Sa Senieta: history beneath the lime of its walls). With archaeologist Sergio Moreno Torres, additionally a collaborator on documenting mass graves in the Pine Islands.

-Thursday, 11: L'Enciclopèdia d'Eivissa i Formentera. Una obra de dos pobles. (The Encyclopaedia of Eivissa and Formentera: A work spanning two peoples). With Felip Cirer Costa, professor of Catalan language and literature and director of the Encyclopaedia of Eivissa and Formentera.

-Friday, 11: La necròpolis de sa Tanca Vella. Un exemple de la població de Formentera dels segles IV-V dC (Sa Tanca Vella burial ground: A glimpse at the people of fourth to fifth century A.D. Formentera). With Maria Eulalia Subirà de Galdàcano, a doctor of human biology and associated professor at the Biological Anthropology Unit at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

As in years past, the CEP will be including the lecture series in its offering of lifelong learning for professional educators, and both the Consell de Formentera and the Govern de les Illes Balears will recognise credits earned from the courses.

Films, hands-on workshops, horseback rides make list of October activities for island youth

foto progOCT019 casal de joves 2The Consell de Formentera youth office presents the October activities programme at the Casal de Joves. Department chief Vanessa Parellada called the run of activities and workshops “part of the ongoing priority to give younger generations leisure options building on values of solidarity, healthy living and environmental attunement”.

Films
Once a week at 6.30pm, Casal staff open the doors so visitors can plop down on the sofa, grab some popcorn and enjoy a film of special relevance to young people. Film fans on Wednesday the 2nd will see Invictus; on Wednesday the 9th they can catch Es por tu bien. The Casal announces Pay the Ghost for Friday the 25th, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 on Wednesday the 30th.

Workshops
Overlapping with World Non-Violence Day on Friday the 4th is a workshop—De quin costat vols estar?—about raising awareness among young people about the kinds of violence that are out there and why they should be proactive about opposing them.

On Saturday the 5th Casal staff will host a workshop where participants can try their hand at a kind of painting tuned especially to send creativity soaring, “spin art”. Friday the 11th , Casal youth can pitch in and paint the columns at the centre, and Wednesday the 16th they can get in on a heart-healthy snack—un berenar saludable—to promote healthy eating, and to learn why that’s so important.

Friday the 18th offers yet another chance for children and teens to add their voice to the larger “Fridays for Future” movement. On Wednesday the 23rd, staff will lead a workshop focused on relaxation, then the following Saturday, one titled “Just dance” geared towards doing just that.

Horseback ride
One particularly stand-out item on the October agenda is a horseback ride. The outing is exclusively for regular Casal attendees. Space is limited, reserve in advance.

Casal staff will also put on dance workshops during the winter months.

This Saturday and Monday, “Fortaleza a la Napolitana” at Sala de Cultura-Cinema

foto v del vecchio 1The Consell de Formentera's Department of Sport reports that on Saturday the 5th, and Monday the 7th of October, islanders can see Fortaleza a la Napolitana at the cinema (Sala de Cultura). The show starts at 8.30pm and admission is €7.

With direction by Andrés Wacksman, Valeria Del Vecchio dances in a production by Fils Roulants. Fortaleza a la Napolitana is a touching expression of the contradition between longing to be self-sufficient and the need for human warmth and protection from hardship. The piece speaks to the duality of a woman who goes through life wearing strength like a mask, and the fragility that proves there's no such thing as a mission to be accomplished.

The production runs 40 minutes and is intended for adult audiences. Space is limited. To reserve seats, send an email to vadelv@yahoo.com.
