Posidonia figure on nautical maps of Formentera

daisee-aguilera--miquel-mir--i1The environment office of the Formentera Council reports that nautical maps put out by the Cádiz-based Instituto Hidrográfico de la Marina and featuring information about the island's neighbouring posidonia meadows are now available for purchase in paper and digital formats.

The measure will enable ship capitans to spot meadows and steer clear of them when anchoring. Environment secretary Daisee Aguilera hailed the news, saying “knowing where the sea grass meadows are is crucial to protecting them” and applauding the collaboration between the Formentera Council, the Govern balear and IHM.

While not the sole factor pertinent to explaining recession of the sea grass, boats dropping anchor on meadows is one the causes. Posidonia is a deciduous underwater plant responsible for the clearness of Formentera's waters, which Aguilera cited when asserting the new maps were “groundbreaking for Formentera and for the Mediterranean as a whole”.

April start
A tool to help highlight the presence of posidonia, the acronym “SG” for “sea grass” has incorporated the nomenclature since April, marking the first time an underwater plant is included on nautical maps. The new term makes it possible to differentiate between the plant and seaweed (unlike the former, the latter has previously figured on similar maps).

For reference in the initiative, IHM used maps from Project Life Posidonia as well as eco-mapping from MAPAMA, which contained information about posidonia meadows across the Balearics.

Formentera turns over sa Senieta keys to Govern as island prepares for museum

visita-sa-senietaAs part of the bid to restore the local building known as “sa Senieta” and equip it to house the island's future museum, the Formentera Council reports that administration officials will use this Friday's plenary session to introduce a plan to grant sa Senieta use rights to the Govern balear.

Once approval for the plan is secured, President Jaume Ferrer and Fanny Tur, the minister of culture, participation and sport in the Balearics, will put their signatures on a bilateral pact by which the Council, sa Senieta's owner, grants the ministry under Tur's charge full rights to use the building at no cost. In turn, the regional ministry pledges to restore and upgrade sa Senieta to equip it as an exhibition space and Formentera's future museum.

The handoff, which enters into force with the agreement's signing, will remain effective until December 31, 2033 and may be extended an additional five years after that. Once the handoff is complete, upgrades and maintenance work will begin under the watch of the Govern balear's Conselleria de Cultura, Participació i Esports.

All costs associated with the project —honoraria, taxes, charges, levies, et cetera— will be paid for by the regional government. Likewise, the Council, which will retain ownership of sa Senieta, must give its say-so before any work on the building can take place.

Future museum network
In accordance with the provisions of legislation passed December 21, 1998, sa Senieta is the only local construction included in Formentera's catalogue of Balearic historical heritage sites—a clear sign of the building's importance to cultural heritage on the island.

In addition to sa Senieta, which will accommodate the Formentera museum's permanent collection and other general services for the public, the island's future network of museums will include two other spaces: La casa de Can Ramon, home to the island's ethnographical collection, and the plot adjacent to Sant Francesc's historical cemetery (the "Fossar Vell"), which will be equipped to hold archives, a specialised library, conference hall, exhibition space, materials drop-off and reservation point and research lab.

The plan is part of Formentera's bid to create a premier “museum circuit” for islanders and visiting tourists that is in line with the Balearic Islands' so-called “Museum Law”.

New directives provide overarching vision to island's image and sound archives

foto-arxiu-imatge-i-so1The Formentera Council's department of patrimony announces the creation of a set of guiding principles for Formentera's Arxiu d'Imatge i So (Image and Sound Archive). The document contains working strategies to find,, research, study and spread the images and sounds that make up Formentera's documentary legacy.

The plan's drafting was stipulated in the island's 2017-2019 strategy for management of cultural heritage. Included in the plan is an organisational model for day-to-day tasks at the AISF, as well as recommendations for ongoing operations, priority actions and clear steps to succeeding in objectives, projects and assorted activities.

The two-year plan establishes a vision for the long-term and effective functioning of the AISF. The first part of the scheme is to prepare and vote on the AISF guiding principles. Objectives include cultivating knowledge about Formentera's cultural heritage, showcasing it as an asset to the community, and offering islanders and associations training in order to shape attitudes about cultural heritage on the island.

According to culture and patrimony secretary Susana Labrador, the AISF guidelines mean islanders can expect to see new hubs of culture and art and museums filling out the island's landscape of cultural institutions. Content and resources will be needed if these institutions are to gain currency with visitors, whether or not they actually live on the island. Labrador asserted research and outreach would be necessary to get the new network off the ground, presaging centres of research and outreach which would be lively and dynamic.

Two months in, organic waste pickup programme keeps 210 tonnes of waste out of landfills

foto materia organica 1The Formentera Council's environment office reports that from May 15 to today, 210 tonnes of organic waste has been collected as part of a programme in which 146 local establishments participate.

In 2018 the administration expanded the service every corner of the island. In the process, two circuits were created to assure organic rubbish pickup for the island's medium-sized and large waste generators. Adherents to the service benefit from an advisory service which is headed up by an “eco-educator” (informadora ambiental) and three agents are responsible for overseeing patrol operations.

Environment secretary Daisee Aguilera hailed the current campaign as highly successful and thanked participating businesses for their collaboration. “Organic waste pickup helps us optimise our waste management operations”, said the consellera, “and it adds up to real savings in the money we spend transporting rubbish to Eivissa”.

Separating plastics
Aguilera called to mind a similar push in 2017 that resulted in pickup of 100 tonnes of organic waste that was subsequently mixed with green garden clippings. The roughly eight-month process generated some three hundred cubic metres of high-quality, garden- and agriculture-ready compost.

Two employees from a firm called Apfem-Aktua which works to integrate at-risk members of society have joined the campaign this year. Their job is to sift out non-biodegradable plastic material from the compost which is scattered across fields, a process which maximises the quality of the final product.

Formentera gets ready for Sant Francesc's 'Flower' bash

flower power sant-francesc alf1When the “Formentera Flower”, one of the most hotly anticipated events on the summer calendar hits the island this Saturday, July 21, as part of this year's Sant Jaume celebrations, it will bring with it a host of performers including DJs Pharma, Blue and Javi Box and Jam Factory.

The real party kicks off at 11.00pm in plaça de la Constitució, though that won't be the first event of the night—that's the “Flower infantil” (Kids' Flower), a party for the island's youngest led by DJ Javi Box and with entertainment by Estrella Llach.

Crafts and sport workshops for young people
The programme gets started at 7.00pm in jardí de ses Eres with an activity promoted as “a workshop of fitness for small children and youth”. Later s'Espurma, a self-styled “school of fun and entertainment”, offers participants the chance to design and put together their own accessories for the evening bash.

Special bus service
For everyone who wants to get in on the Formentera Flower fun without having to get behind the wheel, a dedicated bus service will be activated to link Sant Francesc with other local towns and hot spots.

The line hitching es Pujols and Sant Francesc, and, in the process, making stops in sa Roqueta and la Savina, begins service at 10.00pm in es Pujols and runs every thirty minutes until 1.00am. Every half hour from 1.30am to 5.30am, buses leave Sant Francesc and set out towards es Pujols.

The line connecting el Pilar de la Mola with Sant Francesc also passes through Hotel Riu, es Caló, es Ca Marí and Sant Ferran and makes two evening runs—one departing at 11.10pm and the second at 12.10am. Meanwhile, a total of five departures from Sant Francesc are planned to get residents of la Mola home safe and sound. That service begins at 1.30am and continues every hour until 5.30pm.

Users of the evening's special bus service will be charged €4 for single and €6 for return tickets.
