Formentera prepares for first dance meetup

Dia internacional de la dansaThe local youth drop-in centre, the department of sport and the school of dance and music of Formentera have come together under the aegis of the Formentera Council to host the island's very first gathering of dance troupes.

Set to take over Sant Francesc's plaça de la Constitució this Sunday, April 29 from 12 noon, the event coincides with International Dance Day. The eight participating colles (troupes) will represent a sampling of the different dance veterans here on the island and the types of dance that are practised locally. Onlookers will be treated to demonstrations of classical and contemporary dance as well as displays of capoeira, latin and African dance, “insideout” and varied homegrown specialities.

Island steps up repairs across rural roads

Foto arranjament camins 2017The Council's infrastructure department reports that persistent rain this winter and a technical failure limited work crews' regular maintenance operations.

In an attempt to re-establish the normal pace of work and restore country roads battered by recent months' precipitation, the administration has spent €27,000 (VAT not included) bringing in an outside firm to assist the CiF maintenance brigade. Council officials say they hope the extra manpower will help bring the country roads —most of which are on the island's network of nature trails and heavily travelled— up to scratch in time for summer.

This week crews are working to refurbish roads in Migjorn.

Under the deal, CSF can use the administration's facilities and nautical equipment to direct operations at the school. The club also gets €35,000 to coordinate, manage and maintain the site.

CSF also pledges to hire enough staff to develop the school's activities programme and provide cleaning.

The island's nautical sports centre (Centre d'Esports Nàutics, or CEN) is currently under construction. In the service of Formentera's nautical sector, the new facilities will include administrative and information areas, a training space and the new headquarters of the island's school for water sports.

Construction of the CEN will cost just over one million euros and is due for completion in six months.

Home composting course

Foto compostatge hort vellThe Formentera environment department is hosting a course in home composting this Saturday from 11.00am to 1.30pm. The session will take place in the Council's Sala d'Actes and at Sant Francesc's garden for hands-on learning, Capilla de sa Tanca Vella.

Anyone interested in taking part is encouraged to visit the Council's environment office, located at carrer Mallorca in Sant Ferran, or the CiF Virtual Citizen's Information Office (OVAC).

The course will be given by specialist Juanjo Torres, of Amics de la Terra. Included in the €20 registration fee applied to each participant is a composter valued at €65, a ventilating device, an instruction manual and the knowledge required to compost at home.

In addition to Saturday's session, which will include both theory-based and hands-on instruction, Amics de la Terra offers telephone assistance and a home visit to keep track of each participant's progress after the course.

Formentera to host discussion of children, health and sport

Foto Xavi CanellasFrom 9.00am on Saturday, April 28, Xavier Cañellas will lead an informational session and training programme focussed on children, health and fitness in the local cinema (Sala de Cultura).

Cañellas, a psychoneuroimmunologist, speaker and instructor whose experience spans numerous master's and courses, is also the co-author of the book “Nens sans, adults sans”.

In modern society we are often unaware of the broad changes we have made to our habits and surrounding environment. Unhealthy eating habits, long hours at work and lack of physical exercise are just some of the factors that make for an artificial environment which can wreak havoc on our health. The resulting list of ailments, allergies, intolerances and mental disorders is a long one.

During the Saturday session, Cañellas, who encourages actively engaging in our processes of healing, will guide us in our attempt to uncover the root causes of these ailments, rather than simply attacking their symtoms. He stresses changes in nutrition and lifestyle as measures to restore health, solve emotional conflicts and improve our quality of life. The following subjects will be discussed: Fact and fiction about food; Intestinal microbiotics; Fitness—a need, though not an obligation; and Children, health and sport.
