In a bid to foster fitness activities in 2017, the Formentera Council has struck a deal with the regional government's department of culture, participation and sport by which a fitness foundation within the department, Fundació per a l'Esport Balear, will hand over €23,000 for sport-related activities.
The agreement, signed by Govern minister Fanny Tur and Council president Jaume Ferrer, focuses on a series of fitness activities that seek to promote high performance sport as well as Formentera's image as a place for sport. As part of the deal, the Council pledges to:
-Back high-level sportspeople with noted national and international wins, such as medals at championships in Spain and participation in European and international fixtures or the Olympic Games.
-Partner with sport meets (competitions, seminars, training, etc.) that promote Formentera's image as a place for sport.
-Purchase sports equipment for the training and pre-technical programmes coordinated by the Council.
-Provide Fundació per a l'Esport Balear with proof of payment for all related expenditures as well as a brief summary of related activity to December 15, 2017.
A special commission has been created to oversee the agreement, assess (and address any issues posed by) its application and reconcile any related differences. It will be formed by two individuals: one representative of the Council and another from the Fundació. Fundació per a l'Esport Balear has also pledged to enlist a technically-trained staff to coordinate the agreement and provide necessary technical support.
A vehicle fire on a stretch of private road in Punta Prima was put out by Formentera's fire brigade. Notice of the incident was received at 10.50pm and firefighters reported flames under control by 12.30am. A three-person team of firemen, pick-up and water truck in tow, was joined by members of civil defence and Guardia Civil forces. The latter is currently heading up the accompanying investigation.
The Formentera Council has received an official visit from representatives of the Balearic Islands' council on economic and social affairs, or CES (Consell Econòmic i Social). Today at 12.30pm, Jaume Ferrer and the administration's senior councillors sat down with CES spokespeople in the Council's hall of ceremonies. After the meeting, CiF vice-president Bartomeu Escandell and CES chair Carles Manera gave a press conference before members of the media.
Yesterday Formentera welcomed 250 civil protection volunteers from across the Pityuses for a day of festivities. The day-long celebration, or “Diada,” brought together civil defence groups from Eivissa, Sant Josep, Sant Antoni, Sant Joan, Santa Eulària, Vila, Formentera and the day's special guests from Marratxí, Mallorca.
At 7.00pm on Tuesday, November 21, la Mola's Casa del Poble will host a gathering to update area residents on the progress of initiatives in the neighbourhood. President Jaume Ferrer and the administration's cabinet councillors will outline anticipated upgrades of the town's central square as well as plans to remodel and rebrand la Mola's lighthouse as a facility with multiple functions, among them as a cultural venue.
