Council backs six sporting events put on by local association

signatura conveni geeFormentera Council president Jaume Ferrer and Juanjo Escandell, president of a local sports and fitness association called Grup Esportiu Espalmador, came together today to put their signatures on a partnership agreement. Under the deal the Council will give the group 7,000 euros worth of financial backing for events scheduled in 2016. The money will go towards organising six sports meets: a race that links Formentera's two most famous lighthouses, a road cycling tournament, a mountain biking cup, a July-23 race dubbed la Milla Urbana, and two other popular footraces, la Pujada a la Mola and a memorial race for Formentera's beloved John Tunks.

Thanking the Grup Esportiu for its organising work, President Ferrer underscored the club's “pivotal role in promoting athletics, cycling and triathlon-style competitions”. For his part, Escandell gave thanks for the financial backing received. He said the money would mean lower registration costs and better planned events. Sports councillor Jordi Vidal was also at the signing. In addition to congratulating Escandell on his group's hard work, Vidal highlighted a part of the agreement that is aimed at “ensuring proper separation and collection of rubbish from sports meets”.
