Formentera offers posidonia pulled from beaches for traditional use

foto 2021 illetesThe Formentera Department of Environment is pleased to report it will offer islanders posidonia seagrass removed last month from the beaches of Illetes and Cala Saona.

Interested parties can request up to two lorryloads in person at the FDE (Àrea de Medi Ambient), online through the OVAC, over the phone by calling 971 32 12 10 or by sending an email to mediambient@conselldeformentera.cat. Delivery is free of charge.

Environment chief Antonio J. Sanz applauded islanders for “giving posidonia a new use” and encouraged them “to contribute to the circular economy, which we believe is fundamental to our island”.

So far this year, approximately 2,000 cubic metres of posidonia have been cleared from Formentera shores, less than half the haul in 2020, when storms left 5,000m3 of seagrass washed up on the local coast.
