In 7th year, Formentera Jazz Festival connects with island’s nature and magic

cartell 2021 FJFThe Formentera Offices of Culture and Tourism are pleased to announce that the seventh Formentera Jazz Festival will take place between 23 and 26 September virtually and in person at assorted venues across the island.

Culture chief Susana Labrador expressed her satisfaction “at being able to hold the festival in person once again after last year’s virtual edition”, and highlighted a musical programme "that will unfold over four days in an array of venues and in concord with nature".

Nature and the outdoors are also a common feature in the extensive FOT-backed programme of events —Save Posidonia Project, Formentera Fotogràfica, Formentera Zen, the Half Marathon, Formentera Olympic Triathlon— set to play out on Formentera in the coming days.

FJF organisers, who see the festival’s 2021 edition as a new chance to connect audiences with nature and the magic of the island through music, have turned to a hybrid format combining performances before audiences and livecast connexions sonores.

The festival begins with an online talk by marine biologist Manu San Félix ('Let's save our Mediterranean'; 12 noon, Thursday 23 September) and an evening event with Malinga de Morte at Blue Bar (8.30pm). A returning feature of the festival, FJF’s “sonic connections” will air from some of the island’s most magical corners, and are designed to be heard and observed. The series of virtual tête-à-têtes starts Friday at 12 noon at Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse.

As attendees reconvene at 9.00pm in the Sa Senieta courtyard in Sant Francesc, FJF’s in-person portion will kick off with a 9.00pm performance from local outfit Yakari & Casa Connery, followed by singer Yadira Ferrer at 10.30pm. Saturday at 12 noon, FJF screens will transmit another connexió sonora, this time from beaches and undersea spots near Formentera. In the evening, audiences are once again requested at the Sa Senieta courtyard for a 9.00pm show from Uruguayan violinist Federico Nathan and a 10.30pm performance from Valmuz.

The FJF draws to a close Sunday the 26th with assorted musicians sitting for an 8.30pm jam-session at Chezz Gerdi.
